To Hell and Back – Want to see it on BBC2 national?

Lots of people commented that they would like to see the To Hell and Back programme on BBC2 national as they couldn’t get BBC2 Scotland or download it off the BBC iPlayer in time. If that’s you, please add a comment to this post with your name to register your feeling. Maybe you live in Scotland and saw it and feel it was good enough that the rest of the UK folks should get a chance to see it? Again please comment below.
I’ll flag this post up to the BBC in a few weeks and if enough people comment, maybe it’ll swing it?
Thanks!

Definetly be fantastic to see this getting broadcast on BBC2 national.
ReplyDeleteDave Leonard
I'd like to see it, too! I just moved to Australia and the BBC iPlayer won't even work on my Mac.
ReplyDeleteMark Hellewell
It'd be great to get a chance to see it
ReplyDeleteStephen Mc Gowan
Would be brilliant to see this on BBC2 national, especially since iplayer won't work on my mac.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see it
ReplyDeletePaul Brennan
me too
ReplyDeleteIt'd be great!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see it on BBC2, iplayer doesn't work in Linux.
ReplyDeleteI am yet another Englishman who would love to see this broadcast nationwide. Cheers. Graham.
ReplyDeleteI think its of nationl interst and would love to se it on BBC2.
ReplyDeleteas im a mac user i cannot if i wanted to download it
Rob Stone (york)
Yes, I'd like to see it on BBC2. Luckily I have a friend in Aberdeen who records programmes like this for me and sends them by post. This is about the fourth one so far this year. It's about time the BBC understood that anything to do with mountaineering in Scotland is of national interest.
ReplyDeleteGutted to have missed it! Living in London and working on a Mac, I had no chance :(
ReplyDeleteWould love to see it!
Found that you couldn't use the iPlayer outside of the UK (only after downloading it), so phoned my dad in the UK to get him to download iPlayer and the programme. This he did, to then find that not only can you not copy it (fair enough) the file will only remain on your computer for a couple of weeks! So even if I come to the UK for Xmas, I still won't be able to watch.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, I'd love it to be on BB2 then someone could just video it for me!
It's about time the beeb realised that despite the distances involved, there are millions of English and Welsh people who love the Scottish countryside (and the climbing scene!), and should not be deprived of such an interesting programme just because they are not physically in Scotland!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't download it as I use Linux at work and don't use IE on windows at home. Be nice if there wasn't unnecesarily severe software restrictions.
ReplyDeleteyeah, i saw it via iplayer, but i'd like to have a copy on video for my climbing films collection. I don't see hwy i should have to watch a low res version on my laptop and only be allowed it for 7 days.. c'mon BBC. Maybe i'll move to Scotland!
ReplyDeleteI'd really like to see this - doesn't seem fair that Scotland gets all the best TV!
ReplyDeleteTom
I'd like to see it on national tv. I think many of the recent "outdoors" programs have proved how interested the public is in these kind of shows (Given my non-climber friends responses to them anyway).
ReplyDeleteOllie
One of the best climbing related programs for a long time showing Dave MacLeod the Cairngorms and Scotland at the cutting edge of extreme adventure sport rather than as some quaint "Monarch Glen" backwater. Productions like this are an asset to the country and potential international tourist magnets for the Scottish Highlands if only they were shown more widely. I'm not just talking about the UK. The French and other alpine nations would have absolutely loved it. BTW If the BBC's satelite footprint for BBC Scotland could be extended further south into the rest of Europe I'm sure they would have a big market there too. It is not only English Londeners that travel, live and work abroad!
ReplyDeletefantastic film Dave and definitely worth watching - even my non-climber friends were impressed by your commitment and on the edge of their seats. If they show it again I’ll remember to record it :-)
ReplyDeleteP.S. If the BBC read this, sort out your download program it says I’m not in the UK though looking outside it’s 5pm, dark and raining so I definitely am.
I'd like to see it - missed the original broadcast and couldn't use the BBC iPlayer as I'm on a Mac!
ReplyDeleteYes. Bloody thing swallowed my comment so a simple yes will do.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see it on BBC national(living in Ireland).
ReplyDeleteI'd really love to see it, i missed the download window for the iplayer and live south of the border.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see it on national BBC2, failing that, I'm sure they could find room for it on BBC4.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Andrew
i saw it as I found I could get BBC scotland but I still feel it should be on national telly. People need to watch this film and be inspired!
ReplyDeleteI managed to watch it via the bbc iplayer. However, I feel this really should be shown on national tv (BBC2/4). It's an excellent film with a strong narrative and I'm sure it has the potential to capture the interest of many viewers (even those without a direct involvement in the sport).
ReplyDeleteI'll tell my mum and dad to watch it (after I've assured them that I don't do anything as crazy as this!... :).
I think that they should produce a more polished and slightly changed version* of the programme and show it nationally - aiming at non climbers too.
ReplyDeleteAs one person has already mentioned there's a big interest in outdoor programmes. You don't have to be a climber to see the emotions within the people around Dave in this programme .. anyone can understand those and relate to what these people are going through. In fact for non climbers that and the scenery are all the'll really appreciate ;)
* I think the programme could be improved slightly to help non climbers understand or at least appreciate a little more about climbing aspects .. the skyhook and the comments re: the nut that then proceeded to fall out are what I'm getting at. Not sure exactly how .. I'll leave that to someone who makes these things for a living.
I've already seen this via iPlayer but I still want to watch this on my normal TV rather than my laptop.
ReplyDeleteFantastic climb BTW and a great program all around!
First climbing film I ever watched that really made me feel 'what he's doing is horrible'. Looks hideously bold.
ReplyDeleteIts an awkward comparison, but the footage of IF crux on the Stone Monkey DVD does look like a path in comparison.
I'd like to see it
ReplyDeleteWould love to see it on TV. Live in N.Ireland, seen it on iPlayer, very impressed. Definately worth showing on national TV to a bigger audiance.
ReplyDeleteWhy was there preplaced gear for the actual lead? It didn't look like it needed to be preplaced, was it just to save time? Also after the crux was a large fall being protected by the cameramans position?
As a Scotsman in exile (USA) I would love it if you could get it broadcast either on BBC2 which my parents could then tape or on the BBC Worldwide iplayer.
ReplyDeleteAnd as a former Corpach boy who spent most of my summers growing up in the Glen its nice to see the familiar places from afar.
With the BBC short on money (as reported in the media recently), I guess there is a better chance of them repeating programmes nationally that were shown previously in one region (Scotland).
ReplyDeleteYes I would agree, many non climbers would benefit from this film. If I'm not mistaken a few months ago either BBC 1,2 or channel 4 had an ongoing series being shown in relation to extreme sports (one episode highlighting the climbing world) After which many of my non climbing friends commented positively on. The fact that something inspirational like Dave MacLeod's climb could be missed by the British public would be a saddening to say the least. Although a large section of the British public are seemingly satisfied with low level entertainment such as the xfactor, big brother, etc. there is still a viewing public who would profit from and appreciate a excellent piece of climbing. So please take all the above into account and put it on national television. Yours sincerely s.m (a small time climber who dreams of great things)
ReplyDeleteI was in Albarracin and missed it (will blog about the bouldering there at some point, to help other non-Spanish speaking souls like myself). The BBC with their inclusive policy don't support the iPlayer on Linux, so I was lucky that my in-laws are in Glasgow and stuck it on a DVD for me. But I would very much like to see it broadcast nationally for a wider audience to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteShould be shown on BBC national. Judging by the number of non-climbers who talked about the Leo Houlding documentary and top gear show, I can see a lot of non-climbers really enjoying this. What makes this footage really suitable for non-climbers is the explanation of where the difficult bits are, what happens if you fall at specific points, the conditions and what the belayers have to do. BBC should be proud of this footage.
ReplyDeleteI'd certainly like to see it. I was away while the download was available....
ReplyDeleteCount me in - I read about the broadcast on your blog about two hours after it'd been screened. My timing's about as precise as my footwork.
ReplyDelete\o/
ReplyDeleteYep, count me in too.
I think the BBC would be mad not to show this nationally. You don't have to be a climber to find it completely gripping viewing ... it's so intense, so real, and so scary.
ReplyDeleteI'd to love to see it here in the South.
ReplyDeleteGiven the growth of the sport, and outdoor sports in general, and the level of achievement chronicled here the beeb'd be crazy not to show it. Compelling viewing at every level.
ReplyDeleteI'm all in favour of seeing this south of the border.
ReplyDeleteAlly
would love to see it.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely
ReplyDeleteYes, I would like to see it sown south.
ReplyDeleteCheers Paul Speed
Saw it live on BBC Scotland and downloaded. Truly inspiring, also some what concerning! Worthy of many national repeats!
ReplyDeleteYep I'd like to see it.

the UK should see this film. It was great.
ReplyDeleteThis should definately be shown to the nation! Non climbers would also love it due to the thriller like suspence created. Great climb, great athlete, great cinematography, amazing veiwing!
ReplyDeleteThe Great Outdoors season, or whatever it was called, seemed to be very popular with everyone - all my family were watching it including my Grandma - proving that you don't have to take part in the activities yourself to find them interesting viewing. It's very frustrating to not be able to see programmes like this just because I don't live in Scotland!!
ReplyDeleteYes, this should be shown nationally. Just because the event took place in Scotland does not mean that people in the rest of the UK are not interested. We are shown plenty of other events from round the world, so something so close to home, of such significance, is surely worth broadcasting?
ReplyDeleteMe mum 'd like it.
ReplyDeleteWould very much like to see it on BBC2!!
ReplyDeletewould be great...
ReplyDeletecheers
Danny Harris
I would like to see it on BBC National.
ReplyDeleteI live south of the border so missed it first time round.

Cheers
Nathan Angell
I would like to see it
ReplyDeleteLove to see it.
ReplyDeleteYes please ...
ReplyDeletedave i seen it and yes the everyone in all off BBC regions should see it, it made me wanna keep getting fitter to climb even harder, iseen the pure passion in you climb nto willing to fail nad a fall just make you try harder (to me thanks amazing)
ReplyDeletebeen to dumbie to try out the boulding there wicked, and had a wee look at your E11 there and thought, one day......
David Clydebank
saw it and thought it superb - conveys very well what (hard) climbing is about to those who dont climb. on a human level, i think most people would get something out of understanding a bit about what makes people like Dave tick. not to mention that it would make better tv than so much of whats on...
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see it.
ReplyDeleteDan Brown
I would like to see it again I thought it was that good. Tried to set my video to record it and the timer did not work.
ReplyDeleteSandy
id like to watch it...
ReplyDeleteI would really like to see To Hell and back programme.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see it.
ReplyDeleteHere's another vote for showing To Hell and Back in England.
ReplyDeleteHi Dave,
ReplyDeleteI would definitely like to see To Hell and Back on BBC national.
Cheers,
James
The sooner the better, don't know why it wasn't in the first place.
ReplyDeleteMark
Would love to see to hell and back on bbc2 national.
ReplyDeleteChris
oh pleeaase bbc, let us see this on proper telly! we hardly ever see climbing on telly, this is such a great opportunity...think of the viewing figures julia bradford and tim emmett got!!!
ReplyDeleteC'mon! Lets have this on TV nationwide. Makes me sweat just watching. It'll have people on the edge of their seats!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely should get to a wider audience.
ReplyDeletewould love to see the show. installed everything recently only to find out i live outside the UK so i wasn't allowed to watch it. please let me see the show!
ReplyDeleteThe net was down in my house for the week that the program was available to download via iplayer, damn, now i hope that the BBC bosses will give all us non-scottish climbers a chance to catch the action
ReplyDeleteHaving just watched this on BBC Scotlan's website I can only say it must be shown on national BBC it was wonderful viewing, which provides a view from the very top end of the sport for anyone who watched this summer's various 'celebrity' climbing exploits from "Mountain" etc.
ReplyDeleteIt quietly but poignantly captures what is liked to be married to, or even just care about, a climber not only at your level Dave but I guess at any level. We all ask our partners to accept that we are in control and 'know what we are doing' when on occassion things do slip over that thin dividing line and we are in situations we wouldn't choose to be in again.
A wondeful video essay worthy of a much wider audience
I thought the programme was awesome, it would be great to see it on BBC nationally
ReplyDeleteGareth
I would love to see on bbc2
ReplyDeleteEamon
Would love to see this on BBC2 national!!!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely think this should go out on BBC2!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see it again.
ReplyDeleteI was gutted the 'Great Climb' programme had to be cancelled and would love to see the climb done later in the week (To Hell and Back)on BBC 2 national TV.
ReplyDeleteI just watched the 'to hell and back' thing. Amazing. I doss about the north york moors trying to gradually improve, but watching what the finnal product may be if i try a little harder and aquire some skill just makes me want to go out and climb.- which i have just done :p awesome effort with not just this, but raps, that Echo wall thing, the bouldering and the winter, o and sport ;-) would love to see this on BBC2 and it's good to see a non-peakcentric climber hitting the headlines,
ReplyDeletecheers for the inspiration,
franco
I`ve just watched this program and without doubt it should be broadcast on BBC2 national! I remember watching the televised broadcast of Ron Fawcett doing the 1st ascent of Lord Of The Flies in 1979,from start to finish i was `glued` to the screen, just like I was with Dave on To Hell and Back. What a great piece of T.V it would be to show these 2 outstanding climbers at the top of their `game` by showing the broadcasts `back to back` as a sort of then and now,see how far climbing has come,30 years apart sort of thing.A series of televised broadcasts of major 1st ascents over the years(eg Coronation St) finishing with Dave`s lead on the final episode would be fantastic!Just a thought.
